Youngberry

Youngberry was developed by Byrnes M. Young, a real, named breeder working in Louisiana, from a cross of the variety Phenomenal and Austin Mayes. Phenomenal itself traces back to a cross of the western dewberry 'Aughinbaugh' and the red raspberry variety 'Cuthbert' — meaning Youngberry shares a real, documented common ancestor (the Aughinbaugh dewberry) with Loganberry, also documented in this database, even though the two varieties were bred independently by different people in different states. Youngberry became genuinely significant in its own right as a parent variety: crossed with Judge James Logan's own 'Black Logan' blackberry selection, it produced the Olallieberry, also documented in this database, directly linking Young's and Logan's independent breeding work into a single later hybrid. The fruit is large, wine-colored to nearly black, with a real, distinctively sweet, aromatic, less tart flavor compared to many other bramble hybrids, and a trailing growth habit requiring trellising.
