Tayberry

Tayberry was developed over roughly a decade of work by Dr. Derek L. Jennings, a real Welsh-born plant breeder working at the Scottish Horticultural Research Institute, on the banks of Scotland's River Tay — the direct source of the variety's name. It is a deliberate, purposefully-bred cross of raspberry and blackberry, developed and released around 1979, genuinely distinct from Loganberry, also documented in this database, which arose by pure accident roughly a century earlier from a similar raspberry-blackberry cross. Tayberry is real, documented as notably larger and more fruitful than Loganberry, with an elongated shape and a real, distinctive wine-like flavor. It remains especially popular in the United Kingdom, where it is a genuine favorite for jams and desserts.
