Santa Rosa Plum

Santa Rosa is likely the most famous single release from Luther Burbank (1849-1926), the prolific American plant breeder who moved from Massachusetts to Santa Rosa, California in 1875 and went on to personally develop 113 named plum and prune varieties — more than half of everything he released across his entire career, spanning hundreds of species. Released in 1907, Santa Rosa was genuinely named to help promote the town of Santa Rosa itself in the aftermath of the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which had also badly damaged the town. Burbank named very few of his creations after his adopted hometown, making this a real, deliberate choice tied to that specific historical moment. Modern DNA analysis has confirmed Santa Rosa is a genuinely complex hybrid, descending from at least four different plum species with ancestry tracing back through Japan and ultimately China. It became the most widely grown plum in California and remained so for decades, into the mid-1980s, when it was gradually judged too small and soft for modern commercial shipping standards, even though it remains genuinely beloved for fresh eating and home orchards. The fruit has deep ruby-red, thin skin over amber flesh with a real, distinctive tart-sweet balance.
