John Rick is named for a real, documented individual: John Rick, a nut and fruit grower from Reading, Pennsylvania, active in the early-to-mid 20th century American persimmon and nut-growing community. Selections credited to or associated with him, including this variety, were carried forward and further evaluated by later breeders including Professor J.C. McDaniel of the University of Illinois. It is genuinely regarded by growers today as one of the "legendary" heritage American persimmon varieties, still prized by fruit enthusiasts and collectors.
