Giombo Persimmon

✓ Verified
Japan (traditional)

Giombo produces some of the largest persimmon fruit of any variety, comparable in size to Hachiya, also documented in this database, with thin, smooth skin and sweet, juicy, jelly-like flesh that growers specifically compare to Saijo, also documented in this database. At least one experienced Florida and Texas grower has noted Giombo may possibly be the same variety as one sold under the name "Korean," a real, honest uncertainty rather than settled fact. The tree can be a biennial bearer when young, leafs out early in spring (making it somewhat vulnerable to late frosts), and is specifically well suited to the Deep South and South Texas, with fall foliage that turns a real, notable red.
