Anjou Pear

A very widely grown winter pear valued for its dense, juicy flesh and long storage life, commonly used as a reliable Bartlett pollinator. Genuinely interesting naming history: in Europe the variety was originally called "Nec Plus Meuris," and the name "Anjou" (referencing the French region around Angers) was mistakenly applied to it when the pear was introduced to America and England in the mid-19th century — a real naming error that, much like Bartlett's own story, simply stuck once it became commercially established. It reached the US around 1842.
